Apex Legends has been one of the most popular online battle royale games for a while now, and with each new map, we’ve been introduced to some mysterious creatures (animals) that are hard to explain.
Ever since day one in Kings Canyon, you’ve definitely spotted those huge animals that look like they are out of bounds. Some of you probably might even have wanted to land on them while deploying the ship at the start of the game but probably died in the process.
The question is, what are they? Well, let’s take a deep dive into all the big animals in Apex Legends, not just those dinosaur-looking creatures on Kings Canyon, and find out what their purpose is and do they play any role in the game.
Leviathans
So, these are the animals that are most mysterious and the ones that most people wonder about. If you’ve been paying on Kings Canyon, you’ve definitely seen these giant creatures, mostly in the sea, slowly moving one step at a time. These are 400-meter-tall animals, dwarfing the Horizon off Kings Canyon.
But what are they? Well, they are called Leviathans. We are talking about giants, hailing from their namesake planet.
Many eagle-eyed Players noticed that they look familiar, and there is a good reason for that. These animals aren’t random; in fact, they are a bridge from Titanfall’s universe.
We are talking about beasts that are thousands of tons heavy, with long necks, sturdy legs, and a vibe that screams prehistoric titan crossed with some aliens. So, are they dangerous?
Well, they are not hostileby nature, but as we all know, their danger comes from their sheer size. Apex Legends players remember Season 2 when Leviathans stomped into the map after Flyers lured them closer, and many of you remember how you were stomped by these huge animals, resulting in a quick elimination.
In King’s Canyon, there are two named Lola and Rosie, who are usually around the shores, which is actually a nod to their Titanfall 2 roots and maps like Boneyard.
But these aren’t the only animals in Apex Legends. Yes, over the seasons we’ve seen many new animals introduced in the game, such as:
Flyers – Loot-Dropping Dragons
High above, Flyers—Volaticus locustodraco—swoop through the skies of Kings Canyon and Storm Point. These dragon-like critters, invasive from Leviathan (lore drop, Season 2), stretch 10-15 meters wingtip to wingtip (visual estimate, in-game models).
Added pre-Season 2, they’re loot piñatas—shoot one down at 50 health, and it drops a deathbox with rare-to-legendary gear from your friends list.
Non-aggressive, they’ll scatter when hit, but kill one, and you’ve got a prize. They nest in cliffs, their screeches a soundtrack to the drop, tying the wild to the fight.
Prowlers
On the ground, Prowlers prowl Storm Point and World’s Edge—lion-like predators from Leviathan, now rampant across the Frontier. They can be very irritating at times, right?
At 120 health, these 300-pound beasts (lore-based guess) hit for 30 damage a swipe, spawning from dens or Bloodhound’s Trials. Sometimes they can be quite fast, just like a horse featured in the Kentucky Derby live odds. But in most cases, you can easily down them unless you don’t have any ammo, in which case running or a fist fight is the only option.
In Season 11, they became huntable threats, dropping loot and 30 XP per nest cleared. They’re fast, clocking 20-25 mph, and feral, but in Shadow Royale, they’ll fight for you at 50 health if you’re down to one. Their canine vibe—Legends call them “dogs” in quips—blends menace with a twisted loyalty, making every encounter a gamble.
Downed Beast
Storm Point’s wild card is the Downed Beast—Unknown 045—a crustacean titan that crashed onto the shore in Season 11’s lore.
This 50-meter-long monster killed two Leviathans before the Legends took it down (speculative, based on the event). This creature lies right on the coastline, suggesting that it might have come from the water, and lies dead right beside the huge crane in Strom Point.
We don’t know much about this creature or its origin, but it is definitely a beast. On the map, it may be more of a cosmetic feature, since it is already downed and it doesn’t move, but it is a great way to introduce some spookiness in the game.
Post-mortem, its corpse became a POI, dubbed “Storm Point lobster” by salvagers.
It’s static now, a skeletal landmark, but it’s a one-off rampage, disrupting Bangalore’s “last” match. It’s a reminder that the wild can fight back.
Carthage Spiders
Lurking in Storm Point’s caves, Carthage spiders—Scarabaeidae arachnia—bring the creeps. These mammoth-class arachnids, native to Gaea’s Amelia Mountains (Season 11), range from Bin Spider size to over 7 feet tall.
With six legs and no eyes, they spit venom or pounce for 20-30 damage, their toxic gas a nod to Caustic’s brew. Not as big as Leviathans, but their 100-150 health and an ambush style. They’re a horror show—egg sacs and webs turning caves into death traps, their skittering a jolt to any squad.
So, yeah, the Apex Legends universe is packed with all kinds of animals. From big dinosaur-like creatures from another planet to spooky spiders that spit venom.
Which ones do you think are most iconic for Apex Legends? Must be the Leviathans, right?
