Apex Legends has seen its fair share of wild metas, but the current one might be driving Players to their breaking point. With teams running Alter, Ballistic, and Ash—each packing Devotions—players are being melted in seconds. Ballistic’s kit lets teammates fire for nearly 30 seconds straight without stopping. Respawn has attempted nerfs, but nothing has stuck yet.
But as oppressive as it is, this still isn’t the worst meta to hit Apex. Let’s take a painful stroll down memory lane through some of the most broken, frustrating metas the game has ever seen.
The Revane Meta (Season 9)
Revenant’s Death Totem + Octane’s Launch Pad = Double wave attacks. You’d wipe one team just for them to respawn in shadow form and push again instantly. This was peak “no counterplay” gameplay, and it eventually got nerfed in Season 10.
Seer on Release (Season 10)
Flashbangs. Silences. Heal cancels. Damage. Oh—and all of that from just one tactical. Seer was so busted on launch he made Apex feel like a different game. And even after nerfs, he returned to the meta in ALGS Raleigh without any changes.
Flying Rampart Turrets (Season 7)
Rampart + Crypto = airborne sentry gun. Players placed Sheila on drones and flew them around like mini attack helicopters. It didn’t last long, but it was real.
Horizon’s Tactical Terror
Season 7 Horizon had the most uncounterable high ground in Apex history. Her lift made her impossible to hit while strafing in mid-air. Respawn had to nerf her multiple times before players finally moved on.
Revenant + Conduit Boss Build (Season 20)
This meta turned Revenant into a raid boss. By combining his Forged Shadows ultimate with Conduit’s tactical, he could absorb over 300 damage while his shields constantly recharged. Low-skill, high-reward, and incredibly frustrating.
Catalyst + Seer Scan Walls (Season 16)
Catalyst walls + Seer ult = you’re getting lasered through walls and smokes with no chance to fight back. This combo forced Respawn to remove Digi Threats and nerf both legends.
Wraith + Wingman (Launch Meta)
Old Wraith could instantly phase out of danger. Pair that with a Wingman that fired faster and hit harder than it does today, and you had the sweatiest meta in Apex history.
Pre-Season 7 Caustic Domination
Before Movement legends became common, Caustic was the king of enclosed spaces. His gas traps couldn’t be countered, and he shut down entire teams with ease.
Support Meta (Season 23)
A team full of supports was unstoppable. With Lifeline’s rework and Support perks, fights felt endless as enemies were constantly revived and healed. It was oppressive, unfun, and thankfully short-lived.
Apex Legends Keeps Changing, For Better or Worse
While today’s Devotion-spam meta is brutal, it’s nothing new. Apex Legends has always had its broken eras. Some metas made legends overpowered; others just made the game less fun.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the current Apex Legends meta?
The current meta is dominated by Alter, Ballistic, and Ash using Devotions. Ballistic’s kit lets players fire for extended periods, creating an oppressive combo that Respawn has struggled to nerf.
What was the Revane meta?
The Revane meta was a strategy using Revenant’s Death Totem and Octane’s Launch Pad. Teams would dive in shadow form, attack, and then return to try again. It was extremely aggressive and frustrating to play against.
Why was Seer so broken on release?
Seer’s tactical could flashbang, silence, cancel heals and revives, deal damage, and deploy quickly. His entire kit was overloaded, and he was immediately nerfed after launch.
What was the Horizon lift abuse meta?
In Season 7, Horizon’s Gravity Lift allowed her to strafe at the top of the lift with near-invulnerability. She could beam players from above while being impossible to hit.
What was the most annoying support meta?
In Season 23, support legends like Lifeline and Conduit dominated by constantly reviving and healing each other, making fights feel endless and low skill.
Is Caustic still meta?
Caustic isn’t as dominant now due to more counterplay from newer legends and mobility options, but in earlier seasons, he was a nightmare due to his uncontested gas traps.
